What the evidence says 01 / RECORD
The California grizzly bear (a subspecies of brown bear) survived well into the 20th century, not the 1800s. The California Secretary of State's archive states that in 1922 the last California grizzly bear was shot and killed. The National Park Service notes the last grizzly killed in the state was in 1922 near Sequoia National Park and that no grizzly bears have been sighted in California since 1924. The species was not formally declared extinct until 1953. Placing the extinction in the 1800s is off by roughly two decades.
