What the evidence says 01 / RECORD

In September 2024, Judd et al. published a reconstruction in Science (later visualized by the Washington Post) that used data assimilation to combine more than 150,000 proxy data points with climate model runs, producing a global mean surface temperature curve spanning the past 485 million years. The study found temperatures ranged from about 11 to 36 degrees Celsius (52 to 97 degrees Fahrenheit) and that today's roughly 15 degrees Celsius is cooler than Earth has been through much of the Phanerozoic. The authors stress, however, that present-day human-driven warming is occurring far faster than even the quickest warming events in that record, which poses a risk that species cannot adapt to. So the statement that scientists have reconstructed Earth's climate over the last 485 million years is accurate, though the 'relatively cool' framing should not obscure the study's central warning about the unprecedented pace of modern warming.
