What the evidence says 01 / RECORD
The claim that the FBI formally designated the Proud Boys an "extremist organization" traces to a November 2018 internal affairs report by the Clark County Sheriff's Office in Vancouver, Washington, whose executive summary stated that "the FBI categorizes the Proud Boys as an extremist group with ties to white nationalism." Within about two weeks, the FBI publicly disputed that characterization: the special agent in charge of the FBI's Portland field office said the sheriff's office had taken an internal briefing out of context and that the FBI does not designate broad national groups, including the Proud Boys, as extremist. No subsequent FBI statement or public record has reversed that clarification or issued a formal extremist or terrorist designation of the Proud Boys as an organization. Tim Pool's on-air pushback against Dorsey's claim is consistent with this public record: the "FBI designation" framing originated from a local sheriff's office document referencing an internal FBI briefing, not an official FBI action, and the FBI explicitly disavowed the characterization shortly after it surfaced.
