Joe Rogan on politics: what the evidence says · JRE #2254

Yeah. We were just talking about the wildfire situation and how crazy it is that they spent 24 $1,000,000,000 last year on the homeless.
What the evidence says 01 / RECORD
Rogan claimed California/Los Angeles spent "$24 billion last year on the homeless" while spending nothing on wildfire prevention. The $24 billion figure traces to a California State Auditor report (April 2024) citing the Legislative Analyst's Office finding that the state "allocated nearly $24 billion for homelessness and housing during the last five fiscal years," a cumulative multi-year total, not a single year's spending. On wildfire prevention, state records show non-zero, substantial funding: CalFire's budget for resource management and fire prevention grew from about $140 million in 2016-17 to roughly $440 million in 2024-25, and peaked above $1.1 billion in 2023-24 due to one-time augmentations, with additional funding flowing through other state departments and conservancies. The claim is misleading on both counts: it compresses a five-year homelessness spending total into "last year," and it mischaracterizes wildfire prevention spending as nonexistent when state budget data show ongoing, substantial funding for that purpose.
