Donald Trump on military: what the evidence says · JRE #2219

I defeated 100% of the ISIS caliphate. They said it would take five years. I did it in a matter of a few, literally a few weeks.

What the evidence says

The documented timeline does not support a weeks-long campaign. The U.S.-led coalition against ISIS (Operation Inherent Resolve) began in 2014 under the Obama administration, and territorial losses accrued gradually: roughly 60% of ISIS-held territory was recaptured by mid-2017, about 98% by December 2017, and 99% about a year later, per State Department figures cited by fact-checkers. The last ISIS-held territory, the village of Baghuz in eastern Syria, fell to U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces on March 23, 2019 -- more than two years into Trump's presidency, not a matter of weeks. Analysts also noted that losing territory did not mean ISIS as a group was eliminated, since it retained thousands of fighters and continued attacks afterward. Framing a multi-year, multinational campaign spanning two administrations as something one person completed in weeks is not supported by the record.
